YAMAMOTO NORITEN NOREN

The center of the noren features the Yamamoto Noriten trademark, a circle surrounding the kanji character for the Japanese plum, which has been in use since the company’s founding in year two of the Kaei era (1849). The bottom comprises a gradation of the traditional Japanese pattern known as Korin Oonami, while the left side is adorned with the store’s name written by the calligrapher Seiran Oike, who was active from the Taisho era (1912–1926) to the middle of the Showa era (1926–1989).
The circular trademark is derived from the fact that in the seas of Tokyo Bay when the company was founded, top-quality nori (edible seaweed) was harvested in the winter season when Japanese plum blossoms bloomed, and as with Japanese plum blossoms, it was cherished for its fragrant aroma.

YAMAMOTO NORITEN CO.,LTD.
Founded in 1849
Founded in year two of the Kaei era (1849), our main store has continued to do business in the Muromachi area of Nihonbashi as a nori (edible seaweed) specialty store. In year two of the Meiji era (1869), the company created Japan’s first seasoned seaweed. Under the motto “having as many people as possible enjoy even more delicious seaweed,” the company sells a variety of different seaweed products, including its first-rate flagship seaweed, Umenohana, and Otsumami-nori, which can be enjoyed as a snack. The front of the main store also offers freshly roasted seaweed cooked on a small seaweed grill that reproduces the flavors of charcoal grilling.
